El Paso, TX—Local high school teacher Lacey Brownstone is in shock following the discovery of $34,000 in change beneath her refrigerator, all of which had been pushed underneath by her cat.
She uncovered the find last Saturday when she finally got around to having someone move the refrigerator so she could clean underneath it.
“I kept putting off cleaning under there—you know how it is, having to find someone to come over and help you move it, then cleaning, then having someone help you move it back,” she told the Post while staring at the mountain of quarters. “To be honest, I’ve lived here for 29 years, and this might be the first time I’ve actually done it.”
She decided to move the refrigerator because she was trying to find a more mundane item.
“You know, I haven’t been able to find my good comb for a while, and I’d been really hoping I’d be able to find it under the fridge. I figured I’d kill two birds with one stone and look while I cleaned.”
Brownstone is completely flummoxed as to how she managed to miss $34,000 in change over the years.
“I mean, I realize Brush is always chasing something around the house, and I figured there had to be a few coins under there after all these years, but I never imagined anything like this. I mean, I work in a public school, for crying out loud! Where did it all come from?”
Brush, a long-haired tabby, seemed proud of his accomplishment, but declined to comment for the interview. However, the trove was amassed by two other cats as well.
“I had two other cats before him, Tom Tom and Zuke. I got Tom Tom just after I moved in, and I had Zuke from a few years before Tom Tom died until two years after I got Brush. They must have all been working on this over the years, quietly stowing away a present for me.”
Brownstone doesn’t yet know what she plans to do with the money.
“Oh, I’ve hardly even thought about it yet; I’m still in shock,” she said while sorting the coins into bags. “I might take a vacation, might buy a new car, might just put it all into retirement.”
That said, she does have one disappointment that nags her.
“I never did find my good comb. I looked and looked, sifted through all the coins, but I never did find it. It’s a real bummer. Kind of ruins the whole thing, to be honest.”
