Portland, OR—Nodding politely, local Shiba Inu Marco conjured up yet another pained smile in response to his owner’s friend making what he believes to be the 8000th doge joke he has been the subject of.
Over the past few minutes, Marco had braced himself for the inevitable as his owner ran into a friend while walking at the park. He had seen the friend glance down, and as usual, his eyes lit up, and he appeared to be about to make the obvious observation yet again, but each time he’d tried he’d been interrupted by Marco’s owner. Finally, during a lull in the conversation, the friend repeated the action and finally was able to speak.
“Such doge! Much cute! Wow!”
Doge, according to Know Your Meme, is “a slang term for ‘dog’ that is primarily associated with pictures of Shiba Inus… captioned with interior monologues in Comic Sans font.”
Marco, in a reaction that was practically involuntary by this point, smiled and nodded his head knowingly a few times, allowing the human to understand that the joke was received and understood.
Marco then endured another few moments stopped in the middle of the park while the friend peppered his owner with the same set of comments everyone said, including, “I want one so bad,” “How much do they cost?,” “Such a good boy,” and “You know, I hear they’re really great for hiking.”
Marco’s owner, also weary of the same rote answers, responded as quickly as possible in an attempt to end the conversation and spare his dog another interaction identical to the 7999 before it.
The conversation dragged on for another ten minutes nonetheless, during which time Marco reported having fantasies about not being a good boy anymore.
